Remember the surprisingly popular “Obama’s mama/Bristol Palin” video? Or how about terms like “long-legged mack daddy” or “good house Negro?” James David Manning, founder and senior pastor of ATLAH World Missionary Church in New York City, has been stirring controversy since he first spoke out against Barack Obama during the presidential campaign.
In an interview with Fox’s Hannity and Colmes in March of 2008, Manning attempted to defend his statements about Obama by saying,
“I think what needs to happen in order to be able to understand the statements that I’ve made and the adjectives that I’ve used to described him, we need to look at this matter in the larger context. I see him as being a threat not only to America, that we should put the sovereign power of this nation into the hands of a man who I do not believe is a patriot. That’s the first thing. But the other thing is that black people – for him he represents the worst possible person as a choice that they have made.”
In one of Manning’s latest YouTube offerings, “The White Rodney King,” the Harlem pastor says Obama is pushing white people to the point where there’s going to be “riots in the streets” and a revolution “Patrick Henry style.”
Also, in a recent interview with RussiaToday (RT), Manning says of Obama,”He has used racism very effectively to get his way to the office of President. White America feels very comfortable with him in their living rooms. He was black, so give him an opportunity to do something about their deep emotional commitment to slavery – and that is why they voted for him. It was racism. The whole world focuses on the fact that he is a black man – that’s racism.”
Like Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s infamous sermon clips, after viewing a few of Manning’s videos you can’t help but wonder why he uses such an in-your-face approach, especially as a pastor and community leader. Interestingly, even with his over the top and often demeaning presentations, his videos have been viewed by millions and his following seems to be growing.
Whether you think James David Manning is just another crazy guy or even worse, his ideas about race relations have apparently struck a cord with some Americans who share his videos by the thousands on Facebook, blogs and other social networking sites.
Race aside, lack of trust in our leaders combined with the health care fiasco, our economic woes and fractured political parties, many people are desperately seeking someone who will acknowledge their anger and frustration – even if it happens to be a not so politically correct Harlem pastor.
