According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, U.S. relief groups have collected more than $97 million in donations since a 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti Tuesday – three times more than the amount raised in the three day period following the Indian Ocean tsunamis.

Apparently advancements in technology are making it easier to support various Haiti relief efforts. For example, the American Red Cross not only accepts donations online, but donors can text “HAITI” to 90999 from any mobile phone to donate $10 to the cause. Social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter are also playing a big role in fundraising and networking efforts for Haiti. People who may have been hesitant to donate in the past are contributing their time and money thanks to these innovative outlets and methods.

How can you get involved? The best place to start is to visit the Better Business Bureau’s website which lists charities that meet the BBB Wise Giving Alliance’s Standards for Charity Accountability. The list includes major groups like the American Red Cross, but also includes lesser known groups like Lutheran World Relief.

As always, it’s important to know who you are giving to. Scammers and frauds come out of the woodwork when major tragedies occur. Never make a donation to a group, individual or organization you are not familiar with. That being said, don’t be afraid to give. There are hundreds of legitimate organizations, churches and charities that are providing water, food, shelter, medical, spiritual, and psychological support to the survivors of this horrible tragedy.

Haitians desperately need our help, even if the only thing you can offer is a prayer.
